Nancy Gareau Van Tassell
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been carrying art supplies and producing art from the myriad of materials I’ve found around my house and out in nature. I’ve been known to brave a herd of rambunctious cows while painting a stream in the meadow. I’m not afraid to be adventurous to discover the perfect image to paint.
I’ve taken numerous classes/courses through York County Community College, Maine College of Art, and Heartwood College. I have also taken classes with artists I admire, Anne Abgott and Russel Whitten. Sue Roux and Heather Lewis.
I enjoy working with any medium or material that inspires and allows me to express my creativity. I’ve used metals, charcoal, acrylic, oil and watercolor, my personal favorite.
Michael Fillyaw
I am an award-winning photographer living in West Bath, Maine. I make photographs because it gives pleasure and because I want to capture the moments to have for myself and to share with others. My niche is outdoor photography, and my styles are representational, impressionistic, and abstract.
My work is influenced by contemporary nature and landscape photographers, including Patrick Zephyr, Kurt Budliger, Ian Plant, and Benjamin Williamson, among others.
For me, the enjoyment is in the hunt as well as the capture. Walking on streets, in the woods, along streams, on the beach, and in marshes is physically gratifying. I enjoy feeling the wind, sun, rain, and snow on my face, the weight of the camera and tripod on my back, hearing the pounding waves, the calling of the shore birds, the sloshing of rubber boots in the mud and water, and smelling the pine forest and seaweed. I go to these places without expectations, but always with the same goals: be present in the moment, chase the light, and see what others miss.
Mary Elizabeth Grady
Elizabeth. a Kennebunk based watercolorist. has been fascinated with creating since she was very young. After watching her grandmother hook beautiful rugs and her father fabricate a Kentucky long rifle piece by piece, she explored knitting, crocheting, chair caning, soapstone carving, linoleum block prints, lithography, metalsmithing, pine needle and grass baskets, and rug twining, braiding, and hooking. A member of Maine Women in the Arts, she has studied with artists Dyan Berk, De Witt Hardy, and Dennis Rafferty.
Raised in Pennsylvania, Elizabeth has lived in North Carolina, Alaska, New Orleans, Mexico, Arizona, Guatemala, and Seattle, and inspiration from each place and the natural world often appears in her work.
Trees in particular are a favorite of hers to paint. "Standing Together, her award-winning painting from last year's Maine Women in the Arts show, stemmed from a walk on a brilliant winter day in a Nova Scotia park. She also enjoys splashing a blank piece of paper with color and finding patterns that arise with each brushstroke.
Linda Van Tassell
Maine’s ever-changing seasons and weather produce a variety of visual and emotional moods. I aim to capture the breadth of these oscillations with a medium that is just as transformative: watercolor. Surrounded by water and beautiful scenes in my daily life, I strive to create works that are equally informed by fervid interpretations and natural realities.
Linda received her Bachelor of Science in art at Skidmore College in New York and her Masters in Art and Education from Syracuse University in New York. Ever looking to expand her skills and knowledge of various mediums, Linda has continued her studies at universities in New Hampshire and Maine. After many years submerged in the Florida art scene, Linda moved back to Maine where she continues to pursue the arts with a focus on watercolor.

Europe was a life altering experience for her, and she continues to travel abroad for inspiration. Being able to study the masters from Musee Marmottan Monet, Louvre, Uffizi and others have broadened her skills and highly influenced her work. Jan Van Tassell
By immersing myself in nature, I have come to know its varied personality and reality. Often through the use of watercolor, I visually convey atmospheric perspectives and natural accuracies. This profound respect and love of the woods, rivers, and ocean is perceivably palpable. Viewers can simultaneously appreciate distinct dispositions and recognizable natural elements.
Jan received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Syracuse University in New York and his Masters in Art and Education from The University of Southern Maine. Hilary Zayed
Art is a journey through the creativity of our mind.
Passionate about creating through play, experimenting with new ideas, writing, and speaking along with playing the harp, Hilary enjoys adventuring.
She believes there is nothing more wonderful than getting together with other artists and musicians, it encourages creativity.
However, it wasn’t always about art. She has an Instructor’s degree from the American Horse Show Association along with five years instructing and training horses and riders professionally. Then acquiring a B.S. in Elementary Education and Special Education she moved forward through life teaching in different venues and raising a family. After sustaining a life changing traumatic brain injury she picked up one tiny shard of her broken life at a time and turned to mosaics and art for her recovery process. Through a constant desire to move forward, she put her art and writings pertaining to the process of recovery and reinventing oneself due to a brain injury into a book published by Lash Publishing. It was her book, Reinventing Oneself After Loss, An Artful Insight, that led her to art displays and speaking engagements about art and recovery. Later, a second book emerged, Unleashing Creativity, an Inspirational Awakening written along with four other women. Teaching and sharing the process of playing with art and creativity are what makes Hilary the artist and adventurer that she is today.

Gail Santos
When you buy something from an artist you are buying more than an object.
You are buying hundreds of hours of errors and experimentation.
You are buying years of frustration and moments of pure joy.
You are not buying just one thing.
You are buying a piece of a heart, a piece of a soul……. a small piece of someone else’s life.
Evelyn Nitzberg
Evelyn, is an Award-Winning Signature Artist with Society of Western Artists. This title honors Evelyn's numerous points accrued for juried-in works. A vibrancy of dynamic styles and themes are depicted in Evelyn's innumerable paintings and ink drawings. Surreal concepts express the wonder and mystery of the unknown as in her series Zero Gravity: Lemonade", three lemons floating in dark space.
"Greening of America" focuses on her concer for the overuse of fossil fuel consumed in plastics production, a toy dinosaur eating a plastic jeep, oil rigs in the background. "Bigger Than Life,' addresses the idea that our imaginations sometimes not so friendly, creating fear and making things much bigger than they really are, a tiny dinosaur's shadow looms bigger than life, a clown marionette gazes with trepidation. Wnimsical-lyrical paintings as "Organic Food Chain" defines organic as everything that bums off at 600 degrees F, so everyone should just eat plastic: a parade of plastic animals bite each other by the tail.
Gray Whale Census in Baja, CA as a citizen scientist and the microscopic study of specimens to complete stippled ink drawings for Manine Biologist Ron Patterson, and for Santa Rosa Junior College student lab manuals, honed Evelyn's observational skills: her attention to detail transferred to the careful rendering and expression of color and texture of real objects.
Accolades from a lifetime of exhibitions include an 'Award of Merit' from the California State Fair and innumerable Best of Shows and first place honors. Her work as a muralist, illustrator, fine artist and art educator have been published across the U.S. and Canada. An interview about the critical importance of Art education was published in the American Federation of Teachers magazine (Washington DC).
Dick & Mary Dyer
Artists Dick and Mary Dyer believe in embracing all that life has to offer. Using the macro zoom lens, they capture the unique design and intense color - the essence - of each flower. Inspired by a love of fine art, they had a vision for products of uncompromising quality which provided the starting point from which genuine personal connections are made. Whether it be the rich color, dramatic design or even slight imperfections, we attempt to explore the flower in its simplest form and, often, its most beautiful state. We hope you enjoy what we discover. Mary Dyer graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Graphic Design and a MAT in Art Education and taught for 41 years at every grade level, in public and private schools. She still teaches black and white photography at Camp Androscoggin during the summer. Dick Dyer graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a BS in English and majors in Speech, Theater and a Minor in Art Education. He continues to work in public relations and marketing as he has done since 1981.

Brian Masse
I’m an avid walker and photography is my hobby. Molly, my dog and I enjoy walking the beaches and trails in my hometown of Ipswich, Mass. Having her in my life has ensured I get out and explore with her. This is my first time entering any of my photos. I believe these capture my local area's charm and beauty.
Andrea Roth Kimmich
So many art forms and enterprises demand and compete for my attention, and I dabble in many. It's the art of transformation that appeals to me most, and the joy in making something from nothing. The restoration of older homes has been a pastime of mine but so is making a gazpacho with fresh produce, a gypsy vest of others' leftover yarns, or a painting using discarded paints and wood.
I enjoy artistic ventures most when it’s done in community, so it delights me to contribute work to “The Art of Belonging” show at the Barridoff Fine Art Auction House along with Port Resources Artists.
Kimberly Post
For the last decade I have been exploring the natural world through a practice known as deep looking, the title of this body of work. Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet, and peace activist Thich Nhat Han (Thay) said that deep looking is a form of meditation. He taught that by looking deeply, we develop insight into the Buddhist concept of impermanence
"The practice and understanding of impermanence is not just another description of reality. It is a tool that helps us in our transformation, healing and emancipation. Impermanence means that everything changes
and nothing remains the same in any consccutive moment. And although things change every moment, they still cannot be accurately described as the same or as different from what they were a moment ago. We are often sad and suffer a lot when things change, but change and impermanence have a positive side. Thanks to impermanence, everything is possible. Life itself is possible. If a grain of corn is not impermanent, it can never be transformed into a stalk of corn. If the stalk were not impermanent, it could never provide us with the ear of corn we eat... When we can see the miracle of impermanence, our sadness and suffering will pass."
As a meditation, this extended series goes beyond the concept of still life studies for me. By looking deeply, I recognize beauty at all stages of living and dying. Each change is beautiful in its own way, and through
observing this ongoing change, I hope to more appreciate the changes in my own body, mind, and spirit.
Joel Van Tassell
Growing up surrounded by creative, artist family members, I developed a deep appreciation for the world around me, seeing beauty in every landscape and moment. My photography is inspired by my adventures in nature and travel-whether I’m hiking through national parks, exploring new destinations, carving down snowy slopes, or feeling the exhilarating spray of water while waterskiing. Through my lens, I aim to capture the essence of each experience, preserving the awe and wonder that travel and the great outdoors inspire in me.

Adrienne Kernan LaVallée
I am a studio painter who uses photos, sketches, notes, and objects as source materials for my landscape paintings. Each time I begin working on a fresh canvas, my goal is to capture a feeling for the ever-changing colors, light, and energy of the Maine coast using my memory, imagination and references to reality. My favorite time to create is during the afternoon and into the evening when there are few interruptions.
Everything about oil paint is deeply satisfying to me in part because it remains wet and workable for days. I enjoy the smell of linseed oil and the rich colors and myriad tools I can use to apply the paint, eg. palette knives, brushes, rags, and sometimes my gloved hands. All aid in creating and adding the feelings for motion and vitality that are important to me.
My hope is for my expressively painted, abstracted landscape paintings to stimulate viewers’ senses and present something new or evoke special feelings or memories. When viewers are moved by my paintings, I have succeeded with my goals.
Han Nguyen
I've always struggled to define my identity as a queer woman of color. As a bicultural person, I often find it difficult to fit in and do not feel completely at home in either culture. However, being part of both cultures brings a unique experience. Through painting, I'm able explore my identity as well as expressing my personal thoughts and experiences as a queer woman of color.
My artwork frequently incorporates floral, people, and Vietnamese cultural motifs. When I'm not working on traditional painting, I enjoy creating character designs using digital art.
Margaret L Merril
Watercolor painting has been part of my life since childhood. I am drawn to the fluidity and movement of the medium and its behavior on the paper. I use a lot of water and pigment which I learned does well with heavy paper and rough surfaces. I am inspired by shapes, shadows, movement of light and air which shows itself in the presentation of values in the scenes I observe and in my work.
I am primarily a self-taught artist who has had the good fortune to work with two amazing watercolor artists – Nancy Sargent Howell and Judith Kinsman. I studied with Nancy Sargent Howell for many years.
Connecting with Judith Kinsman here in Maine has been a gift. I have been able to grow and stretch my work since being in Judith’s Saco class beginning in 2012.
Being able to move beyond perceived limitations is my goal, one I am working on daily with the encouragement and support of those around me.
